tips about flexible dentures,

BEFORE YOU WEAR THE DENTURE

MAKING DENTURES MORE FLEXIBLE
Before putting on the flexible partial denture, immerse it in hot tap water for 1 minute. Take out the denture and allow it to cool just to the point where you can tolerate it. Gently insert the denture in your mouth. The hot water will increase the flexibility, which makes it easier to insert it and the denture will be more comfortable to wear.

ADJUSTING DENTURES
If the denture requires slight tightening or loosening of the clasps, immerse the denture in hot tap water. After 1 minute in hot tap water, slightly adjust the denture to make it more comfortable.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET USED TO THE DENTURES?
For some people it takes only a week to feel comfortable with the dentures, for others it takes longer. Your oral tissues and facial muscles should adapt relatively quickly to the denture.

TAKING CARE OF DENTURES

HOW OFTEN TO CLEAN DENTURES?
We recommend cleaning your dentures after every meal to remove food particles.

HOW TO CLEAN DENTURES?
Fill the sink with water when cleaning the dentures to prevent breakage if you accidentally drop them. Clean with a soft brush and with a cleaning agent, such as warm water and soap or with a special flexible denture cleaner. Please avoid using powders and gritty pastes as they can create rough surfaces on the dentures. Also, avoid using most over-the-counter denture cleaners because they are meant for acrylic dentures; those cleaners can cause discoloration.

DO I HAVE TO TAKE OFF DENTURES BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP?
Yes, you have to take off the flexible dentures every night, clean them and place them in a cup of water or a denture holder. Taking your dentures out at night is highly recommended. It gives your gums a chance to breath and helps prevent denture stomatitis. It will also help reduce wear on them caused by clenching and grinding and it can also prevent fractures from happening.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY DENTURES?
The American Dental Association recommends replacing dentures every 5-7 years.

WHAT KIND OF SOAP IS RECOMMENDED FOR PARTIALS?
Some people use hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid to clean their dentures, which are both acceptable. Many dentists recommend using a denture cleaner that is specifically for flexible dentures. Other types of household cleaners and many types of toothpaste are too abrasive and should not be used for cleaning dentures.

MORE QUESTIONS

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I VISIT THE DENTIST?
You should visit your dentist at least twice a year to ensure the health of your mouth. You should also visit your dentist at signs of irritation or frequent sore spots on your gums.

CAN I EAT FOODS LIKE CORN ON THE COB AND APPLES?
It will take some time to master the skill of eating these foods but you can definitely do it.

WHY DO SOME DENTURES BECOME LOOSE AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME?
The main reason is that the tissue in your mouth and the jaw bone changes constantly. Thus, the dentures might need slight adjusting by putting them in hot tap water.
